Mobile data connection speeds are getting better and better after introduction of 4G. Companies are now looking forward to break new milestones in data connection speeds by introducing 5G modems. Qualcomm is one of the companies that introduced its first 5G modem and Mobile World Conference 2017 in Barcelona. The modem was about the size of a small briefcase.
Recently Qualcomm has unveiled its first 5G data connection mobile modem chipset Snapdragon X50 which is much smaller in size and can easily be integrated in upcoming future handsets. Snapdragon X50 offers unprecedented wireless broadband speeds up to 5 gigabits per second. This new 5G modem chip will use 28 GHz millimeter wave band. It can connect using up to 800 MHz of bandwidth via 8×100 MHz carrier aggregation.
The testing of this Snapdragon X50 was done on a reference design smartphone. It is expected that 5G technology will roll out in 2019 or may be 2020 and the chipset will become even compact by then.
Snapdragon X50 and many other mobile modem chipsets will shape the future of mobile data connection capabilities by allowing uninterruptable and unthrottled bandwidth connection. Although the technology might be introduced in 2019 but we will have to wait for a few years to experience the power of these new 5G technology modem chipsets as it will take time to expand the coverage of 5G data connections.
